I am very offended by the Fargo Forum editorial on February 21, 2012. I am a staunch supporter for the freedom of speech. You can call those who would like to see Measure 2 pass , dumb, the measure dumb and destructive, this is freedom of speech, but when an elected official such as Cory Fong gives a power point presentation with colorful slides and than this is used by the opposition, Cory Fong has overstepped into an area not a matter of “freedom of speech”. This power point gives no explanation of how or why this slide presentation was done. It also gives the appearance of complete truth because of the authority of his elected office. Is this the truth? This slide presentation gives the average “dumb” voter the impression that all taxes, every tax would have to be raised, because there is no explanation of what these slides mean. The “Keep It Local” have now posted a disclaimer about this slide presentation, it wasn’t there prior to this lawsuit.
I am unhappy with local officials using my house to pay for their wages, their budgets, like our homes are an unlimited stream of revenue. Calling people dumb, crazy is an abuser’s tool to get control of their subject, where is the freedom of speech for those you call dumb?
I may not understand why some choose a court of law to help enforce a law in this case Century Code 12 the corrupt practice law. In just the past few weeks I went to Senator Cook on a local issue I am in his legislative district, he recommended taking it to court because this is what seems to work the most effectively, obviously our government entities are aware public persuasion is not as effective as the court of law. I think it is so sad those of us who are unhappy with our homes being used to fund government at an unsustainable amount for my family personally, we have no choice but to move, to let our home go to the government if we can’t pay the property taxes, if we cannot take on another job to pay the taxes or go to court.
By making fun of people who are telling the government you are stepping on my toes, year after year, you are like the bystander on the playground who allows the bully to continue their behavior. The debate needs to be among the people not having those we voted to represent us tell us we’re stupid, crazy, weird and than having the media jump on the same song. Measure 2 will take our homes and put them back in our ownership, taxes will and can come from a different source.
In Fargo you have a tax exemption committee, if it is good for some not to have to pay property taxes, if it is economic development to allow some to get out of paying their taxes than why not just do away them totally, why give an unfair advantage to a few. I have pulled Fargo’s tax exemptions from the city’s website and placed them on my website bbuz.biz. If I am reading their report correctly,(I might be dumb), it appears that from 2007 to 2011 they have increased property exempt by $99,658,400 that would be like 997($100,000) homes not having to pay taxes. Was your home one of the lucky winners? Let’s be fair, let’s not call each other names, let’s get the facts and the stories out there, Why is Measure 2 necessary? Measure 2 is for you, the homeowner not just the few, all property owners will benefit.
